Oxaydo is a brand-name prescription drug containing immediate-release oxycodone, a powerful opioid used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is formulated with abuse-deterrent properties designed to discourage misuse by snorting: if crushed and dissolved, it turns into a gel, making it harder to abuse through the nose. However, Oxaydo is still oxycodone, so it carries the same opioid risks of tolerance, physical dependence, addiction, and overdose, and it can still be misused, including by mouth. Common side effects include drowsiness, constipation, and nausea, while serious risks include slowed breathing and opioid overdose. Oxaydo should only be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor, and never combined with alcohol or sedatives.
What Oxaydo is
Oxaydo is a brand name for an immediate-release form of oxycodone, a strong opioid pain medication. It is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain when an opioid is appropriate. What sets Oxaydo apart from standard oxycodone is that it is formulated with abuse-deterrent technology aimed at making misuse, particularly snorting, more difficult.
How the abuse-deterrent design works
Oxaydo contains an inactive ingredient that causes the tablet to turn into a thick gel if it is crushed and mixed with liquid, and it can irritate the nose if snorted. Side effects
As an opioid, Oxaydo’s side effects are those of oxycodone: commonly drowsiness, constipation, nausea, dizziness, and dry mouth. More seriously, it can cause slowed or shallow breathing, the mechanism of fatal opioid overdose, especially at high doses or combined with other depressants. Because Oxaydo is oxycodone, it carries the full range of opioid risks. Regular use can cause tolerance and physical dependence, and misuse can lead to addiction. Taking more than prescribed, or combining it with alcohol or sedatives, sharply raises the risk of overdose, which can cause breathing to slow or stop and can be fatal. The abuse-deterrent formulation reduces one form of misuse but does not remove these dangers.
Treatment for oxycodone addiction
Addiction involving Oxaydo or any oxycodone product is an opioid use disorder and is treatable. Care typically includes medically supervised detox to manage withdrawal, therapy to address the reasons for use, and, where appropriate, medication-assisted treatment with buprenorphine or naltrexone. With the right support, people recover.
