Xanax is a benzodiazepine that enhances GABA in the brain, and at higher doses, or combined with alcohol, it can impair the brain’s ability to store memories, producing a blackout. During one, a person may talk, drive, or make decisions with no later recollection. Blackouts signal a dangerous level of the drug and are far more likely with high doses, misuse, or mixing Xanax with alcohol, an especially risky combination. Frequent Xanax blackouts are a warning sign of misuse or dependence and a reason to seek medical help.
What a Xanax blackout is
A Xanax blackout is a gap in memory caused by the medication. Xanax is a brand of alprazolam, a benzodiazepine prescribed for anxiety and panic. Like alcohol, at sufficient doses it can interfere with the brain’s ability to convert experiences into lasting memories. The result is a blackout: the person is conscious and functioning, but afterward cannot remember what happened.
This is different from passing out. In a blackout the person is awake and may seem relatively normal to others, which is part of what makes it dangerous, they can act, and be acted upon, with no memory of it.

The dangers of a Xanax blackout

They also indicate that the level of drug in the body is high, which brings a real risk of dangerous sedation and, especially with alcohol or opioids, life-threatening slowed breathing. A blackout is a clear sign that the dose or the combination has gone too far.
Blackouts, misuse and dependence
Repeated Xanax blackouts are usually a sign that use has become a problem, whether through escalating doses, misuse, or mixing with other substances. Over time, regular use leads to tolerance and physical dependence, and higher doses raise blackout risk further. Long-term use is also linked to memory and cognitive effects even outside of blackouts. These are all reasons to take blackouts seriously as a warning sign.

If Xanax is causing blackouts, treatment can help. Because stopping a benzodiazepine suddenly is dangerous, this involves a medically supervised taper rather than abrupt cessation, along with therapy for the underlying anxiety and support for any dependence.
